Recommended Book List for Life Writers

Reading extensively, with attention to technique, is a powerful way to improve your writing. I read books about writing to pick up tips on technique and new ideas and insights I wouldn't have thought of. I read memoir to learn what works, and because I love reading about other people's lives. I have read and personally endorse each book in the list below. I've read—or I should say I've started reading—lots of books that don't make the list. I read a lot. New recommendations are added at the top of each list. Click titles for reviews and publisher information. Most of these titles are likely to be available in your local public library, and if it isn't there, ask for it via Interlibrary Loan.
